Lansing Zoning Update & Resident Survey
The Town of Lansing is updating its zoning code and asking residents to share input through a public survey. This is an important early step in a process that will help shape how Lansing grows, what gets built where, and how the town balances housing, business activity, agriculture, open space, and community character.
The survey closes on May 15, 2026.
Why zoning matters
Zoning affects far more than maps and district lines. It influences where homes, businesses, agriculture, and other uses can go, how development is arranged, and how a community balances growth, character, infrastructure, and open space. When a zoning code is updated, it can shape local decisions for years to come.
Why filling out the survey matters
This survey gives residents a simple way to be part of the conversation early. It helps identify what people value, what they want to preserve, and where they see opportunities or concerns. Even if you do not follow zoning closely, your input helps show what matters to the community before decisions move further along.
About the Smart Growth grant
The zoning update is being supported through a $100,000 New York State Department of State Smart Growth Community Planning and Zoning grant. Town and state project materials describe the update as a way to align Lansing’s zoning with community values and sustainability principles, while protecting resources and supporting development in appropriate areas.
What happens next
After the current community discovery and code review phase, the project is expected to move into preliminary zoning code development, draft code refinement, and then public review and the town approval process. Additional public meetings, board presentations, community workshops, and hearings are anticipated as the work moves forward.
